About the Problem

Are you currently enrolled at Barstow Community College?

Context & Problem Description

There is an enormous amount of litter and cigarette butts being dumped every day and not enough effort being placed into awareness or waste disposal units. In addition, recycling units are not readily available to the public and our streets are being cluttered with trash and cigarette butts. Greater awareness needs to be brought forth to the public to clean up their trash and pick up their butts, and more disposal units need to be available so that people are not making a mess of the streets.

Problem Category

How did you identify this problem? (Research, Interviews, etc.)

By simply looking outside, driving around California, and talking to other members of the local community, pollution is a major problem in our state as well as all throughout America.

Problem Details

Who are those affected by this problem? (Provide detailed information including statistics, demographics, etc.)

Everyone in our country is effected- especially in more populated areas of the country. San Francisco, California is listed by Google as the most littered city in the United States alone. The younger generation will be effected the most heavily.

How often does this problem occur?

Every second of every day, as people are too busy with their every day lives or focused on other issues that they consider to be more important than the environment and the impact they are having on the world around them.

Please explain how long the problem has been going on?

This problem has been ongoing since industrialisation began in the early 1900’s, but has become especially prevalent since globalisation and the technological expansion of the early 2000’s.

How is the problem disrupting your community?

The communities are less visually appealing and air quality is diminishing. Children and pets are picking up & putting toxic materials in their mouths. Water supply and the soil in which food is grown is being polluted with hazardous contaminants.

Please explain if the issue is perceived as a problem by your community.

The issue is perceived as a problem because the climate is changing, there is less rainfall, and the local community members are distraught by the change in weather as well as the aesthetic of their homes and their country.

What are the specific geographic areas impacted by the problem?

Local towns and cities across the United States, especially large cities and suburban areas. San Francisco, Newark, Houston, New York, Los Angeles and San Bernadino are among the most littered regions of the United States.

Who are the Stakeholders, those wanting this problem to be fixed?

Recyclers, waste generators, formal and informal collectors, families, and responsible local community members who are upset by the problem.

Team Leader Email (College/Organization/Etc.)

Hi, my submission is about reducing waste in our communities. I believe that a greater sense of awareness needs to be made about the amount of waste that is being left in the environment and that greater efforts should be made to provide disposal units and recycling solutions, so that inorganic materials are not being left in spaces where they can contaminate water, air and soil, as well as effect the lives of children and animals. If more waste disposal units are made available, and a greater sense of awareness is brought forth to people living in cities and towns, then I believe that this issue can be reduced to a fraction of the problem that it is now.
